Lower rate: frequent help or constant supervision during the day, or supervision at night.
Higher rate: help or supervision throughout both day and night, or a medical professional has said you are nearing the end of life.

Those descriptions are gov.uk's, from its what you'll get page.

Day, night, or both: which rate applies

The rate depends on when you need help. Needing frequent help through the day gets the lower rate. So does needing someone to watch over you at night. Needing both, day and night, gets the higher rate, worth £37.90 a week more. Someone a medical professional says is nearing the end of life gets the higher rate under separate, faster rules.

How much Attendance Allowance is a month

Attendance Allowance is set as a weekly amount. As a monthly budgeting figure, the weekly rate times 52 and divided by 12, it is £332.37 at the lower rate and £496.60 at the higher rate.

Who can get Attendance Allowance

According to gov.uk's eligibility rules, you need to be over State Pension age, with a physical or mental disability or a health condition severe enough that you need help caring for yourself, or someone to supervise you, and you need to have needed that help for at least 6 months. You also need to have been in Great Britain for 2 of the last 3 years, with some exceptions.

You cannot get it at the same time as DLA or PIP. In Scotland the equivalent is Pension Age Disability Payment. You usually cannot get it in a care home paid for by the local authority, but you can if you pay all your care home costs yourself.

What Attendance Allowance can unlock

gov.uk says getting Attendance Allowance could mean extra Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction, so tell whoever pays those. A carer looking after someone with substantial needs could get Carer's Allowance. Attendance Allowance itself does not cover mobility: there is no mobility part, unlike PIP and DLA.

Attendance Allowance, PIP and DLA use the same figures

The higher rate is the same figure as PIP's enhanced daily living rate and DLA's highest care rate. The lower rate matches PIP's standard daily living rate and DLA's middle care rate. Someone moving from PIP or DLA to Attendance Allowance at the same level of need gets the same care money, but no mobility payment. See PIP rates and DLA rates.

Questions

How much is Attendance Allowance a week in 2026/27?

£76.70 a week at the lower rate and £114.60 at the higher rate. Over a year that is £3,988.40 or £5,959.20. Which one you get depends on whether you need help during the day or at night, or both, and it is the same rate whatever your income.

How much is Attendance Allowance per month?

About £332.37 a month at the lower rate and £496.60 at the higher rate. Those are the weekly rates times 52, divided by 12. Attendance Allowance is set as a weekly amount, so treat the monthly figure as a budgeting number.

Is Attendance Allowance means tested?

No. gov.uk says what you earn and how much you have in savings will not affect what you get. It can work the other way round: getting Attendance Allowance could increase your Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction, so it is worth telling whoever pays those.

What is the difference between the higher and lower rate?

The lower rate is for frequent help or constant supervision during the day, or supervision at night. The higher rate is for help or supervision throughout both day and night, or if a medical professional has said you are nearing the end of life. It is £37.90 a week more.

Who can get Attendance Allowance?

People over State Pension age with a physical or mental disability or a health condition severe enough to need help caring for themselves, or supervision, for at least 6 months. You cannot get it alongside DLA or PIP, and in Scotland you apply for Pension Age Disability Payment instead.

When do Attendance Allowance rates go up?

Every April, at the start of the tax year. Each rise since 2024/25 has matched the previous September's CPI inflation figure to within 5p, for both rates. The 2027/28 figures depend on September 2026 CPI, which the forecast page works through as soon as ONS publishes it.

Provenance

How this is worked out

Rates come from DWP's benefit and pension rates 2026/27, checked against gov.uk's what you'll get page on 11 October 2026. The two agree to the penny. Eligibility and the descriptions of each rate are gov.uk's own, linked where they are used. Tests pin every figure to the published rates.
